Cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes have a strong association. It is a leading cause of illness for people with Type 2 diabetes, along with lifestyle factors that play a major role. Having diabetes can double the risk of heart disease or stroke. And heart disease is the leading cause of death among people with diabetes. Therefore, it is important to manage blood glucose levels, cholesterol, blood pressure, and other risk factors, along with medication and lifestyle management. This includes nutrition, physical activities, social, emotional, and spirituality to take care of and manage diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors.
There is no specific diet that is meant for diabetes management. Choose a diet that is affordable, matched your health goal, that is culturally acceptable that can be practiced to manage diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors. Work with a dietitian. Make small changes, that are consistent, increase fiber, and nonstarchy veggies, reduce sugar, and add more plant-based oil.
Aim for 150 minutes/week of moderate to aerobic exercise. If we break it down, it is about 20 minutes/day of physical activity. Exercise helps to improve blood sugar, reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and inflammation. Physical activity is also associated with a lower risk of CVD. Daily physical activity, help in managing stress levels, and getting adequate sleep can help promote healthy blood glucose & blood pressure.
A diet high in fiber and low in saturated fat may be helpful. Being physically active, getting regular checkups, and not drinking also can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
