What is Black Fungus or Mucormycosis?

A fungus called Mucormycetes present in the environment is the main cause of Black fungus or ‘mucormycosis’. It is a fatal disease which is most likely to infect old age people during or post covid, apparently due to excessive use of steroids and prolonged unhygienic oxygen delivery. At present, India is estimated to have over 10,000 black fungus cases. The fungus surrounds the blood vessels and destroys them resulting in death of body tissue. Unchecked levels of blood sugar and steroids abuse during Covid treatment are considered as the reasons for the black fungus outbreak.

Common Symptoms of Black Fungus

  • Nasal blockage or congestion
  • Blackish or bloody nasal discharge
  • Black spot over the bridge of nose or palate
  • Blurred or double vision with pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough, chest pain, and collection of water in the lungs
  • Facial numbness or tingling sensation
  • Mild to moderate fever
  • Loosening of teeth

Precautions to prevent Black Fungus

  • Maintain your surroundings clean and free from dust and dampness.
  • Use rubber gloves, masks, and boots while gardening or exposing yourself to nature.
  • Avoid construction areas, fields and grounds.
  • Reduce steroids intake.
  • Keep strict control on blood glucose level.
  • Avoid unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics or antifungals.
  • Maintain good hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Keep yourself hydrated.

What is White Fungus?

Experts have suggested that the White fungus is deadlier than black fungus as it spreads to several parts of the body and severely damages the lungs. Severe effects can also be seen on the kidney, mouth, skin and brain. The white fungus begins from the tongue or private parts, it makes the tongue white, and then it spreads to other parts like lungs, brain and food pipes.

Common Symptoms of White Fungus

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dark spots on lungs
  • Reduced oxygen level
  • White patches in oral cavity
  • Skin lesions

Precautions to prevent White Fungus

  • Maintain a healthy immune system.
  • Maintain your surroundings clean and free from dust.

What is Yellow Fungus?

Yellow fungus starts internally, causes pus leakage, and leads to slow healing of wounds. Unlike Black and White, this fungus can be more deadly as it is invisible and leads to delay in diagnosis. In some serious cases, Yellow fungus could further lead to organ failure and acute necrosis (cell injury).

Common Symptoms of Yellow Fungus

  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy and weight loss
  • Poor or no appetite
  • Sunken eyes
  • Slow healing of wounds and oozing of pus from the wounds
  • Necrosis or cell injury

Precautions to prevent Yellow Fungus

  • Maintain good hygiene habits.
  • Keep your surroundings clean.
  • Prevent the growth of fungus or bacteria in food or surrounding.
  • Keep your humidity level between 30% to 40%.
  • Maintain clean and fresh air flow inside the room and homes.
