Turmeric, commonly known as ‘Haldi’ in India, is a part of the ginger family and its scientific name is Curcuma longa. It is the spice that brings a beautiful golden color to the curry and has a sharp taste and aroma. Turmeric’s bioactive compound makes it a powerful medicinal herb.

  • It is antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral.
  • It contains nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, fiber, protein, sodium, potassium, copper, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc (all present in very small quantities, not enough to meet the recommended daily dose).  Let’s have a look at the various health benefits of turmeric.

Cancer Prevention

Turmeric’s miracle active compound is curcumin, which is rich in antioxidants, a compound often found in plants that protect the body cells from damage caused by activated molecules known as free radicals.  Turmeric consumption can stop the growth of cancer cells and prevent prostate cancer, T-cell leukemia, colon and breast cancer.

Arthritis Relief

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties help in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The antioxidants present in its attack and destroy the free radicals in our cells, which cause cellular damage. Free radicals cause inflammation in the joints. Regular consumption of turmeric can significantly reduce joint pain. Give it a try when experiencing acute or chronic pain.

Curcumin in turmeric treats Uveitis

Uveitis is a flare up of the iris of the eye. Curcumin is found to be as effective as corticosteroids, a prescription medication given to reduce inflammation. Please be advised to always consult a health-care professional for medical conditions such as uveitis.

The anti-inflammatory property protects the heart

It prevents unwanted plaque buildup in the heart which blocks arteries, possibly leading to a heart attack or stroke. Turmeric also prevents platelet clotting and blood clot formation in the arteries.

Improves Immunity

Turmeric has a component called lipopolysaccharide, which boosts and vitalizes our immune system. A strong immune system protects from small ailments such as colds, flu, and stomach upset. It also fights off tumor producing cells. Turmeric is antiviral, anti-fungal, and antibacterial.  A warm cup of milk with turmeric powder in inclement weather is a great relief. Also, check https://www.natural-cure.org/health-and-wellness/how-to-increase-immunity-5-natural-ways-to-boost-immunity/

Disinfectant for Wounds

It’s naturally antiseptic and antibacterial properties makes it a go-to remedy for wounds. It is helpful in other inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis. A turmeric spread in a cut speeds up the body’s innate healing process.

Inhibits Alzheimer’s Disease

One of the causes of cognitive ailments, such as Alzheimer’s disease is inflammation of the brain tissue which leads to hardening of tissues and accumulation of plaque in the brain. Turmeric removes this plaque, by opening up channels for increased oxygen flow and absorption. This can help to relieve some symptoms and also decelerate the advancement of the disease.

Raw turmeric root is best for digestive complications

Turmeric is rich in compounds which help the liver to produce more bile, which aids in digestion and decreases symptoms of flatulence and bloating. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is useful for treating inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis. https://www.natural-cure.org/health-and-wellness/gut-the-second-brain/

It facilitates the production of these enzymes. It also naturally improves blood circulation. Liver health is enhanced with purification and good circulation.

It can be used in powder form to add to your daily vegetables, lentils, stir-fries, and warm milk. It can also be taken in pill form as a supplement. Isn’t mother nature just wonderful? What is often overlooked when turmeric is extolled is that the amount we consume is important. The great Ayurveda vaidya, RK Mishra cautioned that if we consume too much turmeric, it will heat the liver rather than cleanse and cool it. Also, it is fat soluble, so best taken with a meal having ghee or oil. Here in the US people pop turmeric pills like candy. Additionally, some turmeric on the market is phony or diluted with other ingredients. But, yes, it is certainly a wonderful gift from Mother Nature.
