Indigestion is feeling of fullness or discomfort generally after a rich heavy meal. It can affect people of all ages. It affects more after excess alcohol or those under drugs and also people under emotional stress.

There are many home remedies to treat indigestion. Many over the counter antacids are available but popping the pill is not the only solution. Here we have a few tips straight from the kitchen though different options would work on different individuals. In serious condition medical assistance is recommended.

Apple Cider Vinegar

One tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar mixed in a cup of warm water is often used to ease out stomach after heavy meal.It has an alkalizing effect that helps improve indigestion.

For quick relief one can drink this solution 2-3 times a day.

Baking Soda

A teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water also neutralizes stomach and helps relieve gas and bloated stomach. Indigestion is mainly due to high amount of stomach acid and baking soda acts like an antacid.

A lemon lime soda or a ginger ale are tested solution for indigestion.

Sometimes having a plain cup of hot water eases indigestion.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds are very helpful for indigestion caused by very spicy or fatty food. Fennel seeds contain volatile oils that helps reduce nausea and control flatulence.

Take half teaspoon powder of roasted fennel seeds with water or with tea twice a day .

Ginger

Ginger is rich in digestive juices and the enzymes in it acts as the good digestive for the food food. Ginger with its rich properties is an effective remedy for indigestion, especially when it is caused by overeating.

Try to add ginger as spice in the cooking or include raw ginger in your daily meal if suffering from indigestion.

As a preventive measure, just sprinkle salt on freshly sliced ginger and chew it thoroughly after eating a heavy meal.

Add a tablespoon of ginger juice, one teaspoon of lemon juice, one teaspoon of honey and black salt to a glass of warm water and drink it.

Alternatively, add grated ginger boil it in water and make tea it helps in indigestion.

Carom Seeds

Carom seeds or ajwain of all the tips has wondrous results when it comes to healing gas or indigestion also known as Bishop’s weed or ajwain, have digestive and carminative properties that help treat indigestion, flatulence and diarrhea.

Simply boil a tablespoon of carom seeds in 3-4 glass of water and drink it warm 2-3 times a day.

Just eating one teaspoon of roasted carom seeds also provides relief from indigestion or raw carrom seeds can be included in cooking too.

Herbal Tea

The word herbal itself signifies healthy. A cup of herbal tea after a heavy meal greatly reduces indigestion.With a multitude of herbal tea bag variants available in the market choose one with ginger Dip a tea bag in a hot cup of boiling water let the color come and drink it.

Cumin Seeds

Cumin has a long history of use as an Ayurvedic remedy for digestive problems including indigestion and flatulence. It stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes that aid digestion.

Mix one teaspoon of roasted cumin seed powder and black salt in a glass of water or diluted curd and drink it 2-3 times a day or drink butter milk with roasted cumin seed powder after every meal is a very good digestive.

Coriander

Coriander generally an essential spice in Indian kitchen is very effective in treating indigestion as it promotes the production of digestive enzymes and has a calming effect on the stomach.

A teaspoon of roasted coriander seed powder in a glass of buttermilk acts as a very good digestive.Drink it once or twice a day.

One teaspoon of fresh coriander leaves juice mixed with one cup of buttermilk is also very effective. Drink it two or three times a day.

Basil Leaves

Basil is an excellent remedy for indigestion and acidity because of its carminative properties.

Basil leaves tea or having a teaspoon of basil in hot water is also very effective in treating indigestion.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon a readily available spice also helps in alleviating indigestion. It facilitates digestive process and provides relief from cramps and flatulence.

Cinnamon powder can be added to cooking or boiled and taken with tea.

A few simple mantras helps prevent indigestion.

  • Eat small quantity, eat frequent meals and eat slowly.
  • Avoid spicy and oily foods.
  • Don’t do binge eating.
  • It is best to have your dinner three hours before sleep.

These tips or home remedies are helpful in alleviating symptoms of indigestion. In case of intense abdominal pain or nausea and vomiting, take a medical help right away.
